English Secondary 1

Building on the students’ abilities, Aestral Private School’s activities and lessons ensure that students continue to analyse and use pace, volume, tone, word stress and sentence stress when speaking and listening. Students will be expected to develop their critical mindset by evaluating the validity of an argument based on the given evidence and the lines of reasoning presented.

While listening, students will refine their analytical skills such as:

  1. Listen for the gist of a statement using clues and implications
  2. Listen for details to help answer questions like “What?”, “When?”, “Where?”, “Why?”, and “How?”
  3. Make inferences when a statement is inconclusive using their own experiences and drawing from similar situations
  4. Listen selectively to a statement, to help students keep focused on a specific outcome, e.g. compare two sides of an argument
  5. Make predictions about messages, including formation of assumptions and verifying the same

Over the course, students will monitor their thoughts and emotional responses to written and spoken words, allowing them to develop their ability to impress the audience according to an intended outcome.
